9 Days Mount Rwenzori Hiking Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Kasese – Gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel, guesthouse, or Entebbe International Airport by our professional safari guide. You will begin your journey towards Kasese, the starting point for your Mount Rwenzori climbing experience.

The drive takes approximately eight hours, offering beautiful views of Uganda’s countryside along the way. You will make a stop in Fort Portal or Mubende for lunch before continuing towards Kasese.

Upon arrival, you will check into your accommodation where you can relax, prepare your hiking equipment, and enjoy dinner.

Day 2: Kilembe Trail – Sine Camp

After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains to begin your trek. Your hike starts from approximately 1,450 meters and continues upwards through the beautiful Afro-montane forest zone towards Sine Camp at 2,596 meters.

As you ascend, the landscape gradually changes from lowland forests to rich mountain vegetation. Along the trail, you may encounter different bird species, blue monkeys, and other wildlife hidden within the forest.

The route is surrounded by incredible plant diversity, including giant ferns, moss-covered trees, flowers, fungi, and unique alpine vegetation.

A short walk from Sine Camp leads to Nyamwamba Falls, where you can enjoy stunning views and capture memorable photographs.

At the end of the day, you will settle into the wooden mountain huts at Sine Camp, surrounded by forests, waterfalls, and peaceful mountain scenery.

Day 3: Sine Camp – Mutinda Camp

After breakfast, trekking continues towards Mutinda Camp. The trail immediately enters the bamboo zone, where the climb becomes steeper with several sections of high steps.

During the wet season, this area can become slippery; however, the beautiful surroundings make the challenge worthwhile. The thick bamboo forest, fresh mountain air, and scenic views create a rewarding hiking experience.

You will continue climbing through the heather zone, reaching Kalama Camp at approximately 3,147 meters. Here you can take a short break before continuing towards Mutinda Camp.

The trail then crosses small streams, moss-covered waterfalls, and rocky ridges before arriving at your overnight destination.

Mutinda Camp provides spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and peaks, offering a peaceful place to rest after a rewarding day of trekking.

Day 4: Mutinda Camp – Bugata Camp

After breakfast, you will continue your Rwenzori trekking Uganda adventure towards Bugata Camp.

The trail crosses the beautiful Mutinda Valley, covered with unique alpine vegetation, giant lobelias, everlasting flowers, and other rare mountain plants. As you climb higher, the landscape becomes more dramatic, with open valleys, rocky sections, and breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks.

The route continues through challenging but scenic terrain before reaching Bugata Camp at approximately 4,100 meters.

Located in a high-altitude valley, Bugata Camp offers incredible views and a true wilderness experience. Here, you can relax while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the Rwenzori Mountains before continuing the next stages of your climb.

Day 5: Bugata Camp – Hunwick Camp via Bamwanjara Pass

After breakfast, you will continue your Mount Rwenzori Hiking adventure as you leave Bugata Camp. And begin the journey towards Hunwick Camp through the spectacular Bamwanjara Pass.

The trail first follows a mountain ridge. After a short descent, you will begin the steady climb towards Bamwanjara Pass at approximately 4,450 meters above sea level.

On clear days, the pass offers some of the most impressive views of the Rwenzori Mountains, including the magnificent peaks of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and Mount Speke. From here, the trail continues through high-altitude valleys surrounded by moss-covered vegetation, giant groundsels, and giant lobelias.

This section of the trek is also one of the best places to spot the colourful malachite sunbird, which is attracted to the many flowering lobelias found throughout the area.

As you continue, the route includes some steep sections before gradually climbing over the ridge towards Hunwick Camp. Situated on top of the valley, the camp provides spectacular views of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, Mount Speke, and the surrounding mountain landscape.

After a challenging but rewarding day of Rwenzori Mountains trekking, you will rest at the camp while enjoying the peaceful beauty of Uganda’s alpine wilderness.

Overnight: Hunwick Camp


Day 6: Hunwick Camp – Kiharo Camp via Mount Baker and Lake Kitandara

After breakfast, you will leave Hunwick Camp and descend across the valley floor towards the stunning Lake Kitandara.

Lake Kitandara is one of the most beautiful points along the Kilembe Trail.It is famous for its deep waters and unique mountain vegetation. The surrounding landscape provides incredible opportunities for photography and enjoying the unique beauty of the high-altitude environment.

From Lake Kitandara, you will begin the climb towards Scott-Elliot Pass before continuing along the ridge towards Margherita Camp, located at approximately 4,485 meters above sea level.

The camp is positioned between large rocks, providing natural shelter from strong mountain winds. Historically, this area is significant because it was used by the Duke of Abruzzi during his famous expedition to climb Margherita Peak in 1906.

After taking time to rest and appreciate the remarkable surroundings, you will continue towards Kiharo Camp, where you will spend the night surrounded by dramatic peaks and untouched mountain scenery.

Day 7: Margherita Peak Climb – Descend to Hunwick Camp

Today is the highlight of your Mount Rwenzori climbing experience as you attempt to reach Margherita Peak, the highest point of the Rwenzori Mountains and the third-highest mountain peak in Africa.

You will wake up around 2:00 a.m. and have an early breakfast before beginning the climb at approximately 2:30 a.m. This early start is necessary because mountain weather conditions can change quickly, with clouds, snow, and strong winds often developing later in the day.

The climb requires careful navigation across glaciers, rocky sections, and high-altitude terrain. Although challenging, reaching the summit at 5,109 meters above sea level provides a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.

At the top, you will enjoy breathtaking views across Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the surrounding Rwenzori ranges.

For hikers with limited mountaineering experience, there is also an option to remain on the glacier area and climb to a suitable viewpoint near Alexander Peak to enjoy the spectacular scenery.

After completing the summit experience, you will descend back through the mountain landscape and return to Hunwick Camp for rest and overnight stay.

Day 8: Hunwick Camp – Oliver’s Pass – Kiharo Camp

After breakfast, you will begin another exciting day of Rwenzori trekking Uganda as you follow the trail towards Oliver’s Pass.

The route climbs along a wide ridge towards Mount Connell’s area, where you will enjoy some of the best views of the three major Rwenzori peaks. You will continue towards Oliver’s Pass at approximately 4,505 meters above sea level.

From the pass, the trail descends below Wiseman’s Peak towards the Nyamwamba River, which flows through Kilembe and Kasese before reaching Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Along the way, you will notice unique geological formations created by ancient glaciers. These rocky ridges and deposits tell the story of how glaciers once moved through the mountain valleys thousands of years ago.

The trail eventually leads to Kiharo Camp, located deep within a beautiful valley surrounded by high peaks, waterfalls, and dense vegetation.

Day 9: Return to Kampala/Entebbe – End of Adventure

After breakfast, you will begin your journey back from the Rwenzori Mountains to Kampala or Entebbe.

Your guide will pick you up and transfer you back, allowing you to relax after completing one of Uganda’s most rewarding hiking adventures.

Depending on your departure schedule, you will either be dropped off at your hotel or transferred to Entebbe International Airport for your onward flight.

As your Mount Rwenzori Hiking adventure comes to an end, you leave with unforgettable memories of Uganda’s spectacular mountains, unique landscape. And the achievement of conquering one of Africa’s most famous peaks.
