Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is Uganda’s most celebrated wildlife destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for protecting the endangered mountain gorilla. Located in southwestern Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, this ancient tropical rainforest forms part of the Albertine Rift Valley and offers one of Africa’s most unforgettable wildlife experiences.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
The highlight of every visit is Bwindi Gorilla Trekking, one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife encounters. Visitors can trek through the rainforest in search of one of the park’s 18+ habituated mountain gorilla families.
Trekking begins every morning with a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers before entering the forest. Depending on the location of your assigned gorilla family, the trek can last between two and eight hours. Once the gorillas are found, visitors spend one unforgettable hour observing these gentle giants from a safe distance while learning about their behaviour, family structure, and conservation.
Bwindi has four trekking sectors:
- Buhoma
- Ruhija
- Rushaga
- Nkuringo
Each sector offers a unique Uganda Gorilla Safari experience while maintaining excellent chances of seeing mountain gorillas.
Gorilla Habituation Experience
For travellers seeking a longer encounter, the Gorilla Habituation Experience provides an even more immersive adventure.
Unlike standard gorilla trekking, this experience allows visitors to spend up to four hours with a gorilla family that is still becoming accustomed to human presence. Visitors join researchers, conservationists, and Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers as they observe the gorillas’ daily activities while learning about the habituation process.
Currently, Gorilla Habituation is available only in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Batwa Cultural Experience
Beyond wildlife, Bwindi also offers an opportunity to discover the heritage of the Batwa people, the forest’s original inhabitants.
Following your gorilla adventure, you can visit nearby Batwa communities to learn about their traditional way of life before conservation efforts relocated them outside the forest. Local guides demonstrate traditional hunting techniques, medicinal plants, music, dance, storytelling, and the cultural practices that once allowed the Batwa to survive inside Bwindi Forest.

Best Time to Visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park welcomes visitors throughout the year. However, the dry seasons generally provide the most comfortable trekking conditions.
The best months include:
- June to August
- December to February
During these months, forest trails are usually drier, making hiking easier and improving photography opportunities.
Nevertheless, gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation operate every day of the year, allowing visitors to experience the park in every season.
How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Travellers can reach Bwindi Impenetrable National Park by road or domestic flight.
By Road
The drive from Kampala follows the Masaka–Mbarara–Ntungamo route before continuing through Kabale or Kanungu, depending on your trekking sector. The journey covers approximately 512 kilometres and normally takes 9–10 hours.
Along the way, travellers enjoy spectacular scenery, including the famous Ankole long-horned cattle, rolling hills, tea plantations, local communities, and breathtaking landscapes of southwestern Uganda.
By Air
Domestic flights provide a faster option for reaching Bwindi.
Scheduled flights operate from Kajjansi Airfield near Kampala to:
- Kisoro Airstrip
- Kihihi Airstrip
The flight takes approximately 45–50 minutes, after which a short road transfer connects visitors to their selected lodge or trekking sector.
