How to Choose Where to Stay for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Introduction

Choosing where to stay is an important part of planning a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda. The right accommodation can make your trip easier by keeping you close to your trekking area while also matching your budget, comfort preferences and wider safari itinerary.

Before booking a gorilla trekking lodge, however, it is important to understand where your trek will take place. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has several trekking sectors, and accommodation options are located around these different areas. Your trekking location can therefore affect how far you travel to the briefing point on the morning of your trek.

This guide explains how to choose where to stay for gorilla trekking in Uganda, from checking your permit sector and finding suitable accommodation nearby to comparing budget, mid-range and luxury options. It will also help you consider your safari route, number of nights and preferred travel experience before making your choice.

1. Check Your Gorilla Trekking Permit Sector First

Before choosing your accommodation, check the trekking sector shown on your gorilla permit. This should be one of the first things you confirm when planning your stay because Bwindi’s trekking sectors are geographically separated, and accommodation in one sector may not be convenient for a trek starting in another. Current accommodation guides consistently emphasize matching the lodge to the assigned sector.

Bwindi’s main gorilla trekking sectors are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a separate gorilla trekking destination in southwestern Uganda and has its own trekking area Ntebeko / Muhavura

Once you know your sector, look for accommodation near your gorilla trekking briefing point. This is particularly important because gorilla trekking starts early in the morning, so a lodge that appears close to Bwindi on a map may not necessarily be convenient for your particular trek.

For example, a traveller with a permit for Rushaga should prioritize accommodation around Rushaga rather than choosing a lodge simply because it is highly rated in Buhoma. The same principle applies to Ruhija and Nkuringo. Travelling between sectors can involve substantial road travel around the forest rather than a quick transfer through the park.

The simple rule

Confirm your gorilla trekking sector first. Then choose your accommodation.

That one decision can make your trekking morning much easier and help you avoid unnecessary transfers before your trek.

2. Choose Accomodation Close to Your trekking Briefing Point

Once you know your gorilla trekking sector, the next step is to choose accommodation that makes your trekking morning as easy as possible. Gorilla trekking starts early, so staying close to your designated briefing point can reduce unnecessary travel before the trek.

When comparing gorilla trekking accommodation in Uganda, don’t look only at the distance shown on a map. Consider the actual road journey, the condition of the roads and the time you need to reach the briefing point. UWA recommends a 4WD vehicle for several routes around Bwindi because some approaches use winding and unpaved roads.

For example, travellers staying in the northern part of Bwindi may use the Buhoma approach, while those trekking in Ruhija, Nkuringo or Rushaga may follow different routes. UWA notes that the routes to these areas can involve several hours of driving, particularly when approaching from Kabale or Kisoro.

Therefore, when choosing a gorilla trekking lodge, ask:

  • How far is the lodge from my trekking briefing point?
  • How long will the morning transfer take?
  • Does the lodge arrange an early breakfast?
  • Can the lodge help arrange transport to the briefing point?
  • Will I need a 4WD vehicle for the route?

A lodge that is slightly more expensive but much closer to your briefing point may sometimes be a better choice than a cheaper property that requires a long early-morning transfer.

3. Match Your Accomodation to Your Budget

After considering your trekking location, decide how much you want to spend on accommodation. Budget, mid-range and luxury accommodation around Bwindi and Mgahinga offer different levels of comfort, facilities and service.

Budget accommodation

Budget options are suitable for travellers who want to keep accommodation costs lower while focusing their spending on the gorilla experience and the wider safari. These may include community camps, guesthouses and simple lodges.

Estimated accommodation range: US$50–US$150 per person per night.

Mid-range accommodation

Mid-range lodges offer a balance between comfort and cost. They are a good option for travellers who want private rooms, en-suite facilities, comfortable dining and a pleasant setting without choosing a luxury property.

Estimated accommodation range: US$150–US$350 per person per night

Luxury accommodation

Luxury lodges provide a higher level of comfort, service and facilities. Depending on the property, this can include spacious cottages, private verandas, forest views, premium dining and additional guest services.

Estimated accommodation range: US$400–US$1,000+ per person per night.

Estimated Gorilla Trekking Accommodation Prices

Accommodation Level Estimated Price
Budget US$50–US$150 per person/night
Mid-range US$150–US$350 per person/night
Luxury US$400–US$1,000+ per person/night

Estimated accommodation rates only. Actual prices may vary depending on the property, travel season, room type, occupancy, availability and included services.

Current 2026 accommodation guides show a wide range of prices across these categories, which is why travellers should compare the actual property, inclusions and location rather than choosing a category based on price alone.

4. Consider Your Safari Route

Your accommodation choice should also fit the rest of your Uganda gorilla trekking safari. Instead of choosing a lodge in isolation, think about where you will travel before and after your gorilla trek.

For example, some travellers combine gorilla trekking with Lake Bunyonyi for relaxation and scenic experiences, while others continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel. Current Uganda safari itineraries commonly combine these destinations with Bwindi.

Your route can therefore influence which accommodation makes the most sense. If you are arriving from Kampala or Entebbe, for example, you may want to stay in your trekking sector the night before your trek rather than adding another long transfer. If you are travelling from Rwanda or continuing towards another southwestern destination, your accommodation and transport plan may look different.

When comparing gorilla trekking accommodation in Uganda, consider:

  • Where you are travelling from
  • Your gorilla trekking sector
  • Where you are going after the trek
  • Whether you plan to visit Lake Bunyonyi
  • Whether you plan to continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • Whether your safari begins or ends in Kigali

Planning the route this way can help reduce unnecessary driving and give you more time to enjoy the destinations included in your safari.

5. Decide How Many Nights You Need

The number of nights you spend around Bwindi depends on your trekking date, travel route and the other experiences you want to include in your safari.

For most travellers, the night before gorilla trekking is particularly important. Staying in or near your assigned trekking sector means you can reach the briefing point early without starting the morning with a long transfer.

Some travellers also choose to stay an additional night after trekking. This can give you time to rest after a physically demanding trek before continuing to another destination.

If you have more time, you can use the extra night to experience the surrounding area, such as Lake Bunyonyi, community experiences or other activities included in your itinerary. Current Uganda safari itineraries commonly place a night in Bwindi before trekking and then continue to Lake Bunyonyi or Queen Elizabeth after the trek.

A simple way to plan

One night:
Best suited to travellers with a tight itinerary who arrive in the trekking area the day before their permit date.

Two nights:
Gives you more flexibility around the trek and allows time to rest or enjoy another local experience.

Three or more nights:
Useful when you want to explore the area more slowly or combine gorilla trekking with additional activities and destinations.

There is no single number of nights that works for every traveller. The best choice depends on your gorilla trekking permit date, trekking sector, transport route and overall Uganda safari itinerary.

Consider your Comfort and Trekking Style

Your ideal gorilla trekking accommodation also depends on the type of travel experience you want. After a long journey and an early start for your trek, the right level of comfort can make your stay more enjoyable.

If you prefer a simple and practical safari, budget accommodation can give you a comfortable place to rest while allowing you to spend more of your budget on the trekking experience and other activities.

If you want a balance between comfort and cost, mid-range accommodation can provide private rooms, en-suite facilities, meals and a relaxing setting without the higher price of luxury lodges.

For travellers who want a more exclusive experience, luxury accommodation can offer spacious cottages, private verandas, fireplaces, forest or mountain views, premium dining and additional services. Current 2026 accommodation guides also increasingly describe luxury in terms of the overall experience, including setting, service and connection to the surrounding environment rather than price alone.

Your physical comfort can also influence your choice. If you expect the trek to be particularly demanding, reducing unnecessary travel before the trek may be more valuable than choosing a property simply because it has more facilities. Remember that the accommodation does not determine the difficulty of the gorilla trek itself; your trekking sector, assigned gorilla group and conditions on the day all matter.

Before booking, think about what matters most to you:

  • Budget: How much do you want to spend per night?
  • Location: How close are you to your trekking briefing point?
  • Comfort: What room and bathroom facilities do you need?
  • Scenery: Would you prefer forest, valley or mountain views?
  • Experience: Do you want a simple stay or a more exclusive safari experience?
  • Trekking style: Would you rather minimize early-morning transfers before your trek?

There is no single best lodge for gorilla trekking in Uganda for every traveller. The better choice is the accommodation that fits your trekking location, budget and personal travel style.

Common Accommodation Mistakes to Avoid

Choosing accommodation before understanding your gorilla trekking plans can create unnecessary problems. Avoiding a few common mistakes can make your Uganda gorilla trekking safari easier to manage.

Booking the lodge before confirming your trekking sector

Your gorilla permit determines your designated trekking area, so confirm the sector before committing to accommodation. Booking a beautiful lodge in a different sector can result in a long transfer before an already early trekking start. This is one of the most frequently emphasized accommodation-planning issues in current gorilla trekking guides.

Choosing only by photographs

Beautiful photographs can make a lodge look perfect, but they do not tell you everything. Check the property’s location, facilities, meals, transport arrangements and distance from your gorilla trekking briefing point before making a decision.

Choosing only by price

The cheapest room is not necessarily the best value. A slightly more expensive lodge may save you a long early-morning transfer or provide services that make your trekking day easier.

At the same time, paying more does not automatically mean you need it. Choose the accommodation level that fits your actual needs and budget.

Ignoring your wider safari route

Think about where you are travelling before and after Bwindi. A lodge that looks convenient on its own may not be the most practical choice when you consider your complete Uganda safari itinerary.

Forgetting to check what the rate includes

Before comparing accommodation prices, check whether the quoted rate includes meals, drinks, transfers or other services. Two properties with different nightly prices may offer very different inclusions.

Leaving the booking until the last minute

Once your permit dates and trekking sector are confirmed, start looking at suitable accommodation. Popular properties can have limited availability, particularly during busy travel periods.

The simple rule

Confirm your permit sector, consider your safari route, then choose accommodation that matches your budget and travel style.

That approach helps you avoid paying for accommodation that looks good online but does not work well with your actual gorilla trekking plans.
